READ: guide to the ultimate LIFE RESET
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to lose sight of our well-being and the direction we’re heading in. If you find yourself yearning for a positive change, a life reset might be just what you need. Here are four transformative steps to help you embark on this journey and rediscover the path to a fulfilling and purposeful life.
Step 1: Embark on Radical Self-Care
The foundation of any life reset begins with self-care. In the constant demands of modern life, we often neglect our own well-being. Taking time for yourself isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Start by assessing your current self-care routine. Are you getting enough sleep, exercise, and nutritious food? These elements are essential for maintaining physical and mental energy. Self-care is your fuel.
The self-care you do now has helped you get where you are now.
You know when you feel like “I just don’t have the bandwidth for one more thing…” (Ahem, all the time! 🙂 ), it’s because of your self-care. What you do for yourself now has helped you get where you are now.
The only way to go further is by doing more. Not necessarily more time (although usually it is) but by being more aware of what you do. Self care needs to be strategic AND proactive.
STRATEGIC
Make sure what you are doing is actually helping YOU. Self-care is MORE than baths and manicures and a great Yoga practice. (And you KNOW I love me a good Yoga practice! 🙂 )
Self-care can look like a raucous night out with friends, dancing until dawn or a quiet evening with a good book and a glass of wine.
It can look like breaking up with the toxic friend who criticizes you for going for your dream.
It can look like a 10 mile run or a walk around the block.
It can look like sitting with your mate for an hour every morning in companionable silence, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper.
We need to fill up our bodies, minds & hearts, in the way WE need to fill them up.
Self-care also needs to be
PROACTIVE:
Now this will blow your socks off, are you ready?
We need a plan, a system, for our self-care so we are filling ourselves up … here’s the truly radical part … whether or not we feel we need it.
I know, crazy, right?
For so many of us, self-care is that thing you do when you are exhausted, spent, and realize you’ve been short with your mate. When you stop to really check in, you realize you’ve been feeling this way for days, weeks, maybe even months or years.
I think I had a decade of complete exhaustion when my kids were smaller – we had some extra challenges with our son that led to some truly challenging years.
But if we just keep our cup full with a system of self-care already in place, we can often skip the rock bottom.
I will add, we can’t always. Some of life’s curveballs will exhaust us no matter what we do, BUT we will handle them better if we are in a place of being more filled up.
Get a system for daily, weekly & monthly:
- Daily: A little something you do for yourself each day to fill up. Deep breaths, quiet cup of coffee, quick walk, stretch, whatever, but do it specifically to fill up.
- Weekly: Do a little something more each week, something that takes a bit more time AND you look forward to it. A class (such as Yoga?), a walk in a more beautiful spot that maybe takes longer, a lunch with a friend.
- Monthly: Once a month take a full day to fill yourself up. Yep, a FULL DAY. If you like to sleep in, sleep in. If you like to get up early to work out, do it. If you don’t like cooking, eat out. If you love to cook, prepare your favorite meals. If you long to spend a day in bed binge watching your favorite tv show. Just focus on YOU and be mindful of what your body, mind & heart need that day.
Step 2: Evaluate Your Schedule & Routines
Our daily habits shape our lives. We are very routinized people – as in our brains are literally WIRED to follow our habits!
It behooves us to periodically review our schedule and the routines we have settled in to to see if they serve us.
I recommend starting with your morning and evening routine because they are key players in this equation. Take a closer look at your current routines—are they setting a positive tone for your day and helping you unwind in the evening? Your morning routine should energize and prepare you for the day ahead, while your evening routine should promote relaxation and restful sleep.
Consider incorporating activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s reading, journaling, or a short workout, these intentional moments can set a positive tone for your entire day. Similarly, an evening routine that includes winding down activities like a warm bath or calming music can significantly impact the quality of your sleep.
Step 3: Evaluate the 5 Main Areas of Your Life
A comprehensive life reset involves assessing key areas of your life to ensure alignment with your values and aspirations. Take stock of your health & wellness, financial situation, relationships, career/intellectual and your spirituality/connection with yourself . Are these areas in sync with the life you want to lead?
We all need to periodically check in with ourselves and make sure we are where we want to be.
Give each area a score from 1 (rock bottom) to 5 (my DREAM!) and then identify areas that need improvement. Whether it’s nurturing relationships, pursuing career advancements, or committing to a healthier lifestyle, aligning these areas with your aspirations is crucial for a holistic life reset.
Step 4: Find a Vision and Set Goals
Finally, to truly reset your life, you need a clear vision of where you want to go. Envision the life that excites and fulfills you. What are your passions, dreams, and aspirations? Once you have a vision, break it down into tangible, achievable goals – check out Planning My BEST YEAR (so far) for some guidance!.
Set short-term and long-term goals that align with your vision. These goals act as stepping stones, guiding you toward the life you desire. Regularly revisit and reassess your goals to ensure they remain in harmony with your evolving vision.
And voila! A life reset is a transformative journey that requires intentional and mindful efforts. By prioritizing self-care, optimizing daily routines, assessing key life areas, and setting a compelling vision with achievable goals, you can embark on a path of self-discovery and positive change. Remember, the power to reset your life lies within you—take the first step today!
