Learning to Receive Begins in the Body
Midlife has a way of revealing the patterns we’ve been living inside for decades.
One of the most common?
We know how to give.
We don’t know how to receive.
Our generation was raised to be capable, grateful, responsible, and low-maintenance. We were praised for holding it together. For anticipating needs. For being dependable.
And over time, that identity became embodied.
You can see it in the posture. Shoulders rounding forward. Upper back tight. Chest subtly guarded.
The body of a woman who carries.
When I recorded the recent life coaching episode on why midlife women struggle to receive, the response was immediate. So many women recognized themselves in the pattern of over-giving and under-receiving.
I also heard, “I thought I was good at receiving now but then you shared examples and I realized, ‘Yeah, I still do that.'”
But awareness is only the first step.
Receiving isn’t a mindset shift — it’s a nervous system shift.
To receive support, energy, rest, pleasure, or abundance, the body has to feel safe opening.
That’s why I created this heart-opening yoga practice.
This isn’t about extreme backbends or forcing vulnerability. It’s about gently softening the upper back — the place where responsibility accumulates — and allowing space across the heart center.
In yogic philosophy, the heart center is associated with connection, compassion, and self-worth. When it’s tight, we often live in protection mode. When it’s supported and open, we feel more available — to ourselves and to life.
As you move through this practice, you may notice subtle resistance.
That’s okay.
Softening doesn’t mean collapsing. Opening doesn’t mean losing yourself. Receiving doesn’t mean becoming passive.
It means allowing.
Allowing breath.
Allowing space.
Allowing energy to move toward you without immediately pushing back.
This is especially important in midlife, when pushing harder no longer works the way it once did. The body becomes less tolerant of chronic bracing and more sensitive to misalignment between effort and capacity.
If manifestation feels stalled…
If wellness feels harder than it should…
If resentment has been quietly building…
It may not be because you need to try harder.
It may be because your body is ready to stop carrying and start receiving.
This practice is an invitation.
To soften your upper back.
To open your heart.
To anchor the belief: I deserve this energy.
You don’t have to earn it.
You get to practice receiving it.
Roll out your mat. Press play. And notice what shifts — not just in your body, but in your willingness to let life meet you.
