Psoas Release: Let Go of Stress Stored in the Body

If you’ve ever felt like your body is holding onto stress—even when your mind is ready to let it go—you’re not imagining it.

One place this shows up is in the psoas muscle.

The psoas is a deep core muscle that connects your spine to your legs. But it’s not just structural—it’s also deeply connected to your nervous system. Because of where it’s located, near the body’s “fear center,” it plays a role in your stress response.

When you’re in fight-or-flight, your psoas activates to help you move quickly. But here’s the problem:

In modern life, we don’t always complete that stress cycle.

We feel the stress.

We hold the tension.

But we don’t fully release it.

And over time, that tension can settle into the body—especially in the hips and low back.

This is why you might feel:

1. tightness in your hips

2. discomfort in your lower back

3. a sense of holding or bracing in your body

 

And why stretching alone doesn’t always help.

Because the psoas doesn’t just need to be stretched.

It needs a more supportive approach.

In this practice, we focus on three key elements:

  1. rest to calm the nervous system
  2. gentle strengthening to create stability
  3. then stretching to release tension

 

This sequence allows the body to feel safe enough to let go.

Because true release doesn’t come from forcing.

It comes from support.

This is especially important in midlife, when your nervous system is more sensitive to stress and less responsive to intensity.

You don’t need to push harder.

You need to work with your body.

This gentle psoas release practice is designed to help you do exactly that.

 

To soften tension.

To calm your system.

To release what your body has been holding.

Not through force—but through awareness and ease.
