READ: Why Most Resolutions Fail (And How Yours Won’t!)
Every January, you start fresh, determined that this will be the year you crush your resolutions—only to find yourself forgetting about them before the month is even over. Or maybe you’ve long since given up on the idea of resolutions altogether, convinced they’re destined to fail.
I’m here to tell you that resolutions can work. In fact, I’ve seen them transform lives! After 30 years of life coaching, I’ve learned that the key isn’t in avoiding resolutions but in learning how to set them the right way.
New Year’s is the perfect time to reflect on your life and decide what you want to shift, but success requires the right approach. Let’s dive into the seven biggest mistakes people make with resolutions—and how to fix them so your goals actually stick this year.
Dos and Don’ts #1:
DON’T: Set resolutions from a place of frustration…
DO: Decide what you want and get excited about where you are going.
Too often, resolutions are fueled by frustration: “I hate my job.” “I need to lose weight.” “I’m so disorganized.” While these emotions might spark action initially, they’re not sustainable fuel.
Do focus on what excites you instead. Decide where you want to go and get clear on your vision for the future. Maybe you’re excited about creating a career you love, feeling healthier and more vibrant, or finally having a peaceful, organized space. Motivation rooted in excitement and possibility will carry you further than frustration ever could.
Dos and Don’ts #2:
DON’T: Think small.
DO: Think with your dream in mind.
Small goals might feel safe, but they rarely inspire action. If your dreams don’t excite (or even scare) you a little, they’re probably not big enough.
Do think big and align your resolutions with your ultimate dreams. Where do you want to be five years from now? What kind of life do you want to build? Start with the big picture in mind. Then break it down into smaller, achievable steps (we’ll get to that next).
“Be sure you periodically look up to make sure the life you are creating is the life you really want.”
Wayne Dyer
Dos and Don’ts #3:
DON’T: Set the same goals year after year.
DO: Or maybe do…
If you’re stuck repeating the same resolutions every year without progress, it’s time to reflect. Are these goals truly aligned with what you want? Or are they leftovers from old expectations or maybe societal pressure?
Do revisit your intentions. If the goal still matters to you, keep it—but approach it differently this time. Adjust your strategy, timeline, or support system to give yourself a better chance at success.
Dos and Don’ts #4:
DON’T: Change everything overnight.
DO: Do start small.
It’s tempting to dive in headfirst on January 1, determined to overhaul your entire life. But drastic changes rarely stick.
Do start small. Yes, you can dream big, but lasting transformation happens incrementally. Focus on one or two small actions you can take consistently. Want to get healthier? Start with a 10-minute walk each day instead of signing up for a marathon. These small wins build momentum over time.
Dos and Don’ts #5:
DON’T: Hang out with the same crowd.
DO: Or maybe do…
“You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
This quote from Jim Rohn holds a lot of truth. If your environment doesn’t support your goals, it can be challenging to stay on track.
Do surround yourself with people who inspire and uplift you. If your current circle isn’t aligned with your vision, seek out mentors, communities, or groups that will help you grow. That said, you don’t need to abandon your old friends—just be intentional about balancing your time and energy.
Dos and Don’ts #6:
DON’T: Forget about self-care.
DO: Take great care of yourself.
When you’re laser-focused on achieving your goals, it’s easy to neglect your well-being. But burnout isn’t part of the plan.
Do make self-care a priority. Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally isn’t a distraction from your goals—it’s the fuel that powers them. Build rest, nourishment, and moments of joy into your daily routine.
Dos and Don’ts #7:
DON’T: Assume it’s all going to be roses.
DO: Plan for failure.
The road to achieving your resolutions won’t always be smooth. There will be setbacks, moments of doubt, and days when you simply don’t feel like showing up.
Do plan for failure. Accept that it’s part of the process and doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Use reminders to keep your goals top of mind, and when you stumble, take time to reflect.
Ask yourself: Is this goal still important to me? If the answer is yes, take a break if needed, regroup, and keep going. Reconnect with your “why”—the reason this resolution matters to you—and let that guide you forward.
Final Thoughts
Resolutions aren’t inherently flawed; it’s the way we approach them that often leads to failure. By shifting your mindset, focusing on what excites you, and taking intentional steps, you can make this year’s goals not just a January memory but a lifelong transformation.
You’ve got this! Now go out there and make those resolutions stick. And remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Let’s make this your best year yet!
