Podcast #38: Cultivating Courage
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.”
~ Franklin Roosevelt
Think about it…
We aren’t trying to eradicate fear. We can’t. It’s part of the human experience. AND it serves us! Fear keeps us from doing stupid stuff that will hurt us.
BUT it also keeps us from taking the steps in our life that would help us grow and evolve. Fear can keep us stuck in a rut, in a place in our life we don’t even enjoy.
We want to focus on cultivating courage, the gumption to move forward DESPITE the fear!
So…let’s talk all the ways you can help yourself cultivate courage.
Read or enjoy watching the live stream I did on each topic for my IGTV channel. I also did a podcast on the topic.
Change your paradigm: When you experience fear, remember three things:
1. Objectively see the fear for what it is: Keeping you safe.
We like fear, we need it. We need it to keep us safe. So when you feel the fear, you need to ask yourself, “Do I need to stay safe and not do what i am considering?”
A great question to add to that question is…
2. Is the “other side” of the action worth facing the fear?
What does taking the scary step do for you? What will change in your life? Is it worth doing it?
3. Decide to be excited more than scared.
Excitement and fear have the exact physiological response on the body.
The very. same. one. In other words, you can choose to be excited rather than scared.
Think of it like being at the top of the hill on a roller coaster. Are you scared? Or excited? Or a bit of both?
When clients tell me they are excited AND scared about a goal they have set, I respond, “Good! You are in the right spot!”
So…once you decide a scary step is worth it, here are a few ways you can cultivate a little more umph and gumption to help you take the step! (Grab the download with the list below!)
Essential Oils to the Rescue!
Essential Oils are an incredible potent way to build up courage! Here are just four of my faves:
This oils is magical. Really. The story goes the recipe comes from ancient Rome and soldiers would rub it on their shoulders before battle. This blend builds courage. It also grounds your energies. I like to rub it into my feet first thing in the morning and just before bed.
Northern Lights Black Spruce:
This oil keeps us grounded as we reach for our dreams. Black Spruce, the plant, is grown in farms with perma-frost so the roots need to grow very deep for nutrients. Then there is a single sprout that pops up from the plant to absorb the energy from the Northern Lights. Yep, very cool!
Incredibly calming for the nervous system. This oil will help you exhale as you ride the wave of adrenalin that can occur when you are stepping out of your comfort zone. (Oh, and it is a bit stinky. Just being real here. Put it on your feet if you have to, but get it into your system!)
Kinda think this one is self-explanatory, but in case it isn’t, this one is for after the event. When it is time to release the pent up nervousness.

The way we hold our body can build courage or foster fear.
Certain yoga poses are incredibly powerful for helping us create courage. In the video I teach you about two in particular (no experience necessary!)
You can read about building courage on your yoga mat here: Personal Strength: It’s all in the Feet. This post also has an 18 min yoga series you can enjoy to help you build courage on your mat!
Step #1: Choose a date:
If the action is a big one and you need some prep time, set a date for when you will be taking the action: ___________________
Step #2: Build up reserves of energy:
It takes energy to step out of your comfort zone. Reserves can be built up with conscious self-care. Consider more sleep, exercise, relaxation, better foods for your system, getting hydrated, spending time with people who fill you up. Whatever fills you up will give you the energy to take the step you need to take.
What will you do?
Step #3: Build resolve:
Get stronger in your conviction: Stand tall, do Warrior yoga poses and
backbends, repeat affirmations, use essential oils such as Valor, and remind yourself WHY you are taking the action — what is on the other side of the fear?
Step #4: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…Go!:
JUST DO IT.
Step #5: Recuperate:
The aftermath of a big “step through fear” moment can take people by surprise. Depending on the size of the action, there is usually an adrenalin surge of excitement and then complete exhaustion, like a washcloth wrung out. Be sure you have set aside time to rest and fill up.
One final though: The best reason EVER for taking action!
One final thought for you as you begin your journey through fear.
I really feel the most important reason to step out of our comfort zone and stretch is we stretch ourselves. Each time we do something that is a bit scary, we become bigger ourselves. Think of it this way, when you do something scary, it isn’t as scary the next time, is it? It’s because YOU are different as a result of the first time you did it!
Then, and this is the best part, we are ready to take even BIGGER steps that were out of our reach originally!
